Sonagachi Gets a Colorful Makeover in 2018

Updated: Aug 31, 2018

In spring 2018 Anandam worked with artists from Aravani Art Project for in the creation of a mural honoring transwomen sex workers. This is a landmark project and the first time this distinct community will have space through mural paintings in the area. The mural was constructed on the walls of the health clinic building situated in the heart of the red-light district. The images are symbolic of the violence, discrimination, gender expression and the communities’ pursuit for rights. Community members assisted artists in the week-long painting process. Anandam looks forward to working with Aravani artists to continue the process of beautifying Sonagachi through beautiful and thoughtful depictions.
